If the idea of going to the dentist leaves you apprehensive, you’re not alone. Around 40 percent of participants in one study conducted by the National Institutes of Health reported “some fear” associated with going to the dentist. A further 10.8 percent reported experiencing significant dental phobia.
There are many reasons why our patients may opt for the benefits of sedation dentistry. Our office offers two safe and effective forms of sedation: nitrous oxide and oral sedation. We even offer a comfort menu with options like pillows, essential oils, and other relaxation items. The doctors of Napa Family Dental believe that truly great dental service is both comfortable and effective.
Are you a candidate for sedation dentistry?
There are many reasons that a patient may benefit from the calming effects of sedation dentistry. Some patients have a low pain threshold, meaning that even treatments for cavity removal can be stressful. If you have pain-related concerns, do not hesitate to tell one of our doctors. While sedation does not address pain directly, when coupled with the numbing effects of local anesthesia, sedation can induce a dream-like state that is both calming and stress-relieving.
If you are undergoing a lengthy restorative or cosmetic treatment, sedation can make time seem to fly by. Under the effects of sedation, even procedures that last one, two, or more hours can seem to be over in far less time. This can be a great benefit for patients who are not looking forward to a two-hour treatment.
Some patients simply have difficulty sitting still for a long period of time. If you suffer from restless leg syndrome or are prone to fidgeting, sedation can help you physically relax throughout your treatment. Sitting still can also aid our doctors as they work to perform intricate treatments on your gums and teeth. For long procedures, sedation can even cut down on your overall treatment time because our doctors are able to work more efficiently.
What are my sedation options?
Our office offers nitrous oxide and oral sedation. Nitrous oxide delivers a steady stream of a sedative gas and oxygen. The gas is administered through a tube that is placed over the nose. Once inhaled, the gas enters the bloodstream where it is quickly absorbed by the brain and central nervous system.
Patients report that nitrous oxide induces feelings of calm, euphoria, and relaxation. Once the stream of gas is turned off, the effects will quickly wear off. Nitrous oxide is one of the few sedation options that allow you to drive yourself home after your procedure.
Oral conscious sedation is administered via a pill. Patients can pick up their prescription medication at a nearby drug store. You will be given special instructions on when to take the pill. There are multiple sedation options available that can meet your pain-related needs. The effects of these pills wear off slowly, so you will have to have someone drive you home following your procedure.
